At Skypeak, a 4-room BTO in Bukit Batok, our clients were a young couple setting up their first home together, with a rustic industrial theme they'd wanted since a trip to New Zealand the year before. There were no children to plan storage or safety around yet. That sounds like it makes the brief simpler, but it actually means the style choices carry more weight. This is the home they picked for themselves, not one shaped by anyone else's needs.
Rustic industrial leans on dark laminates and exposed fixtures, and the risk with that palette in an HDB flat is straightforward: it can make a smaller footprint feel dim rather than moody. We handled this with exposed track lighting throughout, which does two jobs at once: it fits the industrial aesthetic and keeps the dark surfaces properly lit rather than swallowed in shadow.
The kitchen sink sits at the window. It's a minor layout call, but it means washed dishes and a damp sink dry naturally in daylight and airflow instead of sitting in a windowless corner. It's the kind of decision that doesn't show up in a mood board but shows up every single day you live in the home.
Commit to the theme you actually want, not the safest one. A BTO renovation for a couple without children has more room to take a stylistic risk than a family home does, and that's worth using. Bring the pictures, the trip photos, the mood board you've been saving. That's exactly what the design proposal meeting is for.
